Mad Jack has an outlet @ Paradiz Centre

We were at Mad Jack @ Jalan Kayu sometime back, so when I saw this outlet opened at Paradiz Centre, I was quite surprised. Apparently they have a number of outlets, including 1 at Bukit Timah. Great job in the business expansion! The food is good, and that helps a lot I think.

Not sure if I've seen vegetarian options the last time, but yupz there are various choices for the vegetarians out there too.

We ordered lemon fish that comes with yummy mushroom rice, as well as this huge chicken pattie burger. With addition $2, it comes with another pattie, and that makes it a 4 pattie chicken burger! Heh heh heh. The chicken burger was great, with soft bread buns and patties that were very flavourful. The lemon fish was nice too, especially when the mushroom rice added some asian touch to the food.

The whole dinner for 2, plus drinks, cost about $28. This is slightly 'ex' for a casual dinner but considering the portion and location, it is reasonable.

Traditional Coffee in Milk Cans

Not sure if anyone still order 'take-away' kopi in such cans, but I'm sure we remember these 'cans' kopi from earlier days. Those were the days when styrofoam cups were uncommon, and coffeeshops re-used the milk can to make kopi (it also make use of the last bits of milk in the cans!). Somehow coffee served in such cans taste better than those in styrofoam cups.

I ordered one such kopi today, and the coffeeshop auntie actually smiled when i said 'kopi - kong' (kong is hokkien for can). Anyway, the design is quite ingenious because the whole can is held intact by the slight dent at the can opening, such that the 'cover' is locked safely. To open the can of coffee, one only needs to press the side of the can slightly, and the 'cover' would spring up.

So next time try a 'can' of such coffee, and see if you like it.

Afternote: This post was 'yesterday'ed'!

Heng Hwa (兴华卤面) Noodles near Boon Keng MRT

There are also great coffeeshop stalls selling good (and cheap) food! One such stall is the Heng Hwa (兴华) 小吃 located at the row of stalls right at the Boon Keng MRT exit, i.e. blk 27.

For just $3 you get a big bowl of 兴华卤面 noodles with plenty of 'lala' clams (easily 10 over of them) and pork slices, with cabbages (plus other vegs) and peanuts. The soup is very flavourful, with a stew like texture. Unlike local versions, the 兴华 has no dark sauce and thus appears plain in colour.

Drop by and give it a try when you are in the area. ;)

Umbrella Box @ NUS - another umbrella vending machine

When I was at NUS, I saw yet another umbrella vending machine. The umbrella vending machine at NUS is by Umbrella Box. Previously when I posted about the Uport umbrella vending machine located at Marina Square, I thought that was pretty innovative without realising that there are so many such 'Umbrella' machines around.

The umbrella from Umbrella Box is cheaper, at $6 each (instead of Uport's $8). Uport's machines have screens with videos, and located at commercial spaces, so I guess the price is more expensive.

Nowadays we have so many different types of vending machines, lolz, and it was the same day I just realised there are also vending machines for hot 'can' drinks (Pokka)!

Movie - Sing to the Dawn

We watched Sing to the Dawn over the weekend, hoping to support some local production, and I'm somewhat disappointed actually. While I understand that the graphics will not be as great as some other animations, I didn't expect the script to be that chessy.

I don't think they follow that much of the original story from Ho Mingfong, other than the basic plot of a girl in a village who wanted to get the scholarship to go to the city for study. Some lines inside don't exactly gel well with the developments, e.g. "Dear, I want a new pair of shoes." coming from demanding female bats while the main characters are trying to flee from a fire scene, seems quite ridiculous.

Overall impression that I had was that the makers of the movie were trying out different styles of animation (dancing monkeys, spinning 'modern casino', and some weird monkey god thingy), and made use of the opportunity to screen them in movie.
